Artist bio:
I am a brand designer and owner of my one person studio Solo Design Studio. Offering branding, print and digital design to businesses. I have also had the opportunity to work on product design, room set photography and art directing on set and on location in previous employments.
Recently I’ve been making my own artwork which is an escape from my day work. I started it as a mindful activity away from my computer, cutting paper and making arrangements based on my love of bold shapes and plants.
Why I applied:
I am not a fine artist but feel I am creative, I just lack technical ability such as drawing or painting so I feel cutting paper is a natural way for me to illustrate my observations. I would like to see where my style and techniques could evolve and I’m looking for a space to let myself ‘play’ rather than think as a designer and have considerations for ‘purpose’ ‘answers’ and ‘promotion’.
Highlights & Discoveries:
My residency so far has been enlightening. Venessa has pushed me to observe and play rather than consider the output of an idea. I am now dissecting art techniques and ‘having a go’ rather than automatically thinking that I can’t do it. I’m also looking around the city as a ‘tourist’ like Venessa has suggested. Looking up to see shapes and observations that I would have otherwise ignored. The combination of playing with different techniques and being an observer has already made me feel more like an artist rather than a designer.
Looking ahead:
I’m looking forward to seeing what evolves from my experimental phase. I am currently looking into underwater corals and plants, researching the weird and wonderful underwater shapes and I’m also a lover of grids, windows and architectural shapes alongside natural organic shapes so I’d love to see how these worlds can combine and what media I can use. I am enjoying mark making and feel I prefer an abstract view on observations so I’m also looking into Impressionist styles and emulating mark compositions.
